Bible Revelation  Chapter 2 & 3

Chapter 2 & 3 addresses the seven churches and my premise is that the seven churches discuss Christianity as a whole dealing with different situations that we need to overcome. Jesus, the son of man is walking in the Christian world and he has given us seven scenarios that we need to think about because we might be talking about ourselves and we need to overcome .1
If we overcome he gives us wonderful promises.

To the angel of the church in Ephesus write, the words of him who holds the seven stars and walks among the lampstands. (Going by Revelation chapter 1: we know we are dealing with the son of man.)

“You test apostles and have found them false. I do know you are enduring patiently bearing my name and you have not grown weary, but you have forsaken the love you had at the first, repent and do what you did at the beginning, if you do not I will remove your lampstand from its place.”

That is a lesson for us all, because we are all eager at the beginning and as time goes on we lose the fire that keeps us earnest in serving Jesus Christ. Nicolaitan's are doing works Jesus hates them doing.2 Jesus is pleased that the Ephesus church hate what the Nicolaitans were doing as well.

He tells the Ephesus church they must repent, they had one problem to fix, go back to what they did before, find the love they had in the beginning, if they conquer the son of man will give them the right to eat of the tree of life which is in the paradise of God.

The interesting question to ask is, Has the Holy Spirit revealed to you that you are an Ephesus, you have moved from what you knew was right in the beginning of your Christian life, or sometime in your later Christian walk you moved on, but you now know you have made a mistake, in fact the son of man is saying here (in Ephesus) you have made a mistake, or your church has made a mistake you moved from that mission you had, but for some reason you changed the focus in your life, or the focus of the church in some area?”

So, from him (son of man) who holds the seven stars and who walks among the golden lampstands he is saying to you or your church, “Repent, turn around and go back to what you did in the beginning because I have shown you, you have moved into an area I did not want you to go. So before it is to late and the lampstand is moved from you come back to me, put yourself back into the centre of the work I wanted you to do.”3 You need to have an ear to hear and you need to conquer, no matter whatever happens to you.

To the angel of the church in Smyrna write the words of the first and the last, who died and came to life4 “I know your trials and even though you are poor you are really rich and you put up with the slander from those who say they are Jews, but are really not,5 but really belong to Satan. Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw you into prison and for a while you will have trials, but be faithful to death and I will give you the crown of life. If you can get yourself to listen to what I say and conquer, you will not be hurt by the second death.”6

So, from him (son of man) note, he who died and rose again, so again, we know we are talking about Jesus Christ, the son of man and notice he (Jesus Christ) speaks the same as God the Alpha and Omega the beginning and the end, or as Revelation 1:8 who was and who is and who is to come,7

So, from him (son of man) he knows your circumstances, it does not matter what your circumstances are, be faithful to death. These words of Jesus Christ fit us perfectly, keep on keeping on, do not waver from your faith in Jesus Christ, he will look after you now in this world and then he will take you home. He (son of man) will give you the crown of life. You need to have an ear to hear and you need to conquer, no matter whatever happens to you.

To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: “The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.8 We know it is the. son of man who has..."

Jesus is saying hold fast to his name and do not deny the faith. That is exactly what has happened, the Pergamum church has held fast Jesus's name and the faith of son of man, but Jesus said, I do have a few things against you. False teaching of Balaam (idols) from a person called Balak that caused Israel to stumble by eating food given to idols and then practice immortality. Also there is a problem of Nicolaitan's teaching as in the church of Ephesus. Therefore repent. If you do not I will go to war against you with the sword of my mouth.”9

We can apply the lesson in this church (Pergamum) to ourselves or the church we attend. We need to be watchful to make sure we do not move from the message Jesus has given us in the Bible,10 It is so easy to add to your faith particularly when the Bible goes back to almost two thousand years, and that faith given to us so long ago is applicable to us today.11

So as we move into this computerized world we need to make sure we keep our faith in Jesus Christ in place. You can keep your faith in place and be innovative as a person doing God's work, and you be innovative in your church, because so much technology is available now to add to our own Christian work and Church's work. In fact, much of the technology available now is an asset as we do God's work we can do a better job.12

You need to think serious about what the son of man has to say if you do not sort out this problem. “I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.” Clearly we are talking about doctrine the written word given to us from God.” 13

If you overcome it is worth thinking about the promise Jesus gives you, “I will give you some of the hidden manna.”

Now, we need to now think about what Jesus had to say on this subject of manna. “Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness...He (God) gave them bread from heaven,” Listen to what Jesus states here, “My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”14
However you want to decide what is meant by getting the hidden manna, we can be talking about the word of God which is our food. We also know that the word became flesh15 which is Jesus Christ.

My thinking is, that in the context of Pergamum, we are dealing with doctrine problems and its application. If we overcome and get back to the word of God and apply it correctly, Jesus them gives you more. He gives you things about God's word that is in the Bible but you have not seen before. How many time have you said, “I have gone over this chapter for twenty years and this is the first time I have seen this.” That is what happens. I believe that God's word is so deep that we cannot get into God's world because it is so vast. As Jesus said, ”You are in error, because you do not know the scriptures or the power of God.”16 So, if we overcome, conquer, Jesus gives you more of the knowledge of God.17 He opens the word even more to you and increases your faith.

Not only will the son of man will given you hidden manna he will also give you a white stone with a new name written on it and no one knows except him who receives it.18 Before we talk about the white stone this having a name that no one else knows is similar to when you repent and the only person who really knows that is God and yourself, so have a white stone with your name on it could be that white represents purity verses a black stone. Such as white robes showing you sins have been forgiven. A fresh start in purity in God's kingdom you have been victorious. The seven churches is about conquering and you will have a reward because of your victory.

Another thought, The meaning of the white stone is less clear. Several interpretations are possible. That’s because stones were used in a variety of situations in ancient times. A white stone given to a person at the close of a trial meant he was acquitted of his crime. This symbolic meaning for the Christian is clear. The child of God has been exonerated of his or her sins through Christ’s cleansing sacrifice. It is through Jesus’ atoning blood that we freely receive our acquittal. The ideal of judicial judgment would also link the white stone to the "great white throne judgment" (20:11). This is a symbol of God’s final, just and merciful judgment on humanity...We should also note that the color white is characteristic of Revelation. It speaks of white garments (3:5), white robes (7:9), white linen (19:8, 14), and the aforementioned great white throne judgment (20:11). White, in these cases, represents a kind of spiritual purity.19

Jesus said to the overcome's, “He will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows except he that receives  it.

I do like this quote as well, A “white stone” was given to the over-comers – and it is something that is associated with showing a token of approval from the highest authority:  Jesus. In the ancient world of that day, the giving of a white stone was known as a token of favor, prosperity, or success, in almost every major culture. The giving of a white stone to the accused was often the way that a judge or ruler would show that an accused was “not-guilty”.

Now in this token of approval Jesus said there would be a “new name written” which also (like the hidden manna) would be hidden from the knowledge of most – but known to those who “receive it.” This stone represents the special favor God has upon his true people, especially when they have been falsely accused like “Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth” (see Revelation 2:13). Those who truly have received him and love and obey him are his, and the witness of this acceptance is known by them – but not by false hypocrites. 20

You need to have an ear to hear and you need to conquer, no matter whatever happens to you.

With the first three churches we can see we are dealing with the son of man and the application in the church's fits into this period we are living from Jesus time to now and in the future. We have another four churches to look at. What will we find?

To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: The words of the son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze21

I know what you are doing, your love, faith service and patient endurance. Your patient endurance exceeds anything else you do. I do have something against you, Jezebel has tricked you into doing the wrong thing. There is no need to go into the background of Jezebel because obviously she was wicked and caused people accept false teaching and practice immorality and eat food sacrificed to idols. Jezebel might be mentioned here, but for us today ourselves and our church's we could be tricked accepting false teaching. Many people and church's have accept false teaching22 False teaching can clearly lead us to immorality. Good or corrupt activity according to God's rule. God has said we are to have no images to God23 Yet many people and churches have images that are used to remind them of God. The images become like gods. The world is full of images depicting God. That is immorality, forbidden by God. I am sure you can list other things that can lead to immorality such as a love of money, obsession to work. Immorality can apply to you or your church in so many ways. We need to be on guard and let Jesus Christ guide you. Clearly let you Bible (God's word) be centre in your life in what you being taught.24

One of the great attributes of God that he is compassionate and caring. The son of man said, “I gave her time to repent,”25 Jesus did not come to judge, but to save the world,”26 You can see the son of man is not interested in judging you.27 If you are disobeying Jesus, he wants you to repent, go back and put things right. Ultimately, if you do not repent, a time will come for judging . The son of man states at that time , 'I will give to each of you as your works deserve.

Those in Thyatira who are not beguiled by Jezebel or follow her teaching, “ I will not lay any other burden on you, except, hold fast what you have until I come.”

Note the promise, “If you conquer and keeps my works until the end I will give him the power over the nations and he shall rule them with rod of iron.” Obviously it is important to get to the end because in the church of Smyrna we have a similar concept to be faithful unto death, then the promises.

As a layman even the fourth church can be understood by us without a Theologian having to come up with an interpretation we did not see and may not even be there.

To the angel of the church in Sardis write,: The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. Once again we know it is Jesus the son of man who is speaking to the church of Sardis.

I believe this message from Jesus is applicable to so many churches today. “You have a name of being alive, but you are dead.” Fancy Jesus saying that to you as a person or your church, you are dead in spite of you thinking you are alive. Really you are not alive, you are dead. Frightening to think that Jesus could be saying this to you or me or maybe your group, church.

Jesus is saying, “Awake, and strengthen what was left, you have nearly lost everything about you faith, but if you awake and remember what you had in the beginning and heard, keep that which you had ,and repent. you will be back in my (Jesus) will. But if you do not listen to me and will come like a thief a time you do not know.”

The way Jesus is talking here the situation is serious. You could be a disobedient servant and there are serious consequences. Think about Matthew 25:14-30 and the talents, five, two, then the one talent that servant was disobedient and punished. That could be you, me or the church.

Fortunately in this Sardis church some people have not soiled their garments,28 I will not block your name out of the book of life. Fits in with Matthew 25 discussed above. Notice the great promise Jesus will confess your name before my Father and the angels.

You need to have an ear to hear and you need to conquer, no matter whatever happens to you.

If I was you I would take serious the message of the seven churches and this Sardis church has a serious message to us. So I hope you listen because I surely am.

To the angel of the church of Philadelphia write: The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

Before you look at Philadelphia think about the consequences of these words of Jesus who has the key of David. If God makes a decision no one change unhinge his decision. God can unhinge his own decision29 but no person will thwart God's plan, whatever that is.30 Now you can understand it is God/Jesus who opens or shuts.

It is great that Jesus said to the church, “I know your works and I have put an open door before you that no one can close.” This tells you that if you are in Jesus's will nothing can stop you. He has given you the ok. Run the race to the best of your ability.

Obviously, the Philadelphia church for some reason is being hindered in Christian work because Jesus said, “I know your work...but you have little power. 31 Really, it is clear with Jesus words, in God's will, you will have the power to do his work. Jesus gives you the vision to do his work, well, run with it. You only have to make sure you are doing the son of man's work, not what you want to do. If you do what you want, not God's work you could be like this church (Philadelphia) having little power.

Jesus did have good things to say, “You have kept my word and have not denied my name,” Even though in the church there were people who were counterfeit Jesus was going to expose them and show them he loved them (church) because they kept his word of patient endurance. Jesus then promises them because they were faithful to him he would keep them from the hour when trial goes on over all the earth, to try those who dwell on the earth32 I am now putting the last footnote into the main essay because it is an important point in dealing with the book of Revelation and the understanding of many other texts in the Bible. You can clearly say that the hour here, need not be in the future, but can be now, think about this statement, “Children it is the last hour;...many antichrists have come; therefore we know it is the last hour.”33 Therefore, tribulation, trial, testing, can be happening today, that is to you, me and your church. We need to overcome, conquer which the seven churches talk about.

Jesus said, “I am coming soon, hold fast what you have, so that no one can seize your crown.” This fits in with the second coming of Jesus Christ and making sure you are ready for him.34 “You must be ready; for the son of man is coming at an unexpected hour.”35

If you conquer Jesus said, “I will make that person a pillar in the temple of my God; never shall go out of it and I will write on them the name of my God and the promises continue...”36

You need to have an ear to hear and you need to conquer, no matter whatever happens to you.

The message of the angel of the last church Laodicea I believe is important but not less then the message of the other six churches but Laodicea's problem is embedded in all our churches and often ourselves.

So we have the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation. This statement leads you to note that God is not talking about himself. If that is the case, we are talking about Jesus Christ the son of man.

The son of man wishes that you were hot or cold. How often do we find people and those in the church who claim Jesus Christ but have no interest in doing something for the Christian Faith lukewarm they are. Jesus said, “I wish you were hot or cold, but because you are lukewarm I will spew you out of my mouth.”

The son of man is talking according to another criteria to us or churches (Laodicea) because here the church is saying (I can be saying the same to myself) I am well of, I need nothing, the appearance of prosperity is there yet something is wrong. Jesus is saying, “You do not know you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked.” Fancy Jesus saying that to you, me or your church. Wow! An indictment like that. It is true today, so many churches and people have the look of prosperity in the material sense and Christian prosperity yet the son of man is saying to you you are wretched.

Jesus has given us the clue about what the problem is. “Those I love I reprove and chasten.” So, we know that you are a Christian, alternatively, Jesus is in your church but something needs to be fixed according to Jesus. So Jesus states, “I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may be rich, and white garments to clothe you and keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen and salve to anoint your eyes that you may see.” The fact that Jesus said buy gold refined it is a question of purity, that is you may be in a position that wood, chaff, unnecessary items have come into your life, or your church could be adopting things in your church could have taken away the purity of worshiping God in some way. So Jesus is saying to you cut away the unnecessary which could be an embarrassment later. Salve to anoint your eyes is the help you see clearly what needs to be done so that you become refined gold full of God's blessing. Therefore be zealous, repent and you will be on fire serving Jesus Christ.

Having said all this about the Laodicea church the son of man has a message for you and are you ready to listen because he adds, “I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” It is obvious to me that Jesus wants you to do his work according to his instructions. If for some reason you have gone onto a byway away from the centre of your work he will tell you in some way37 If you listen he will welcome you for making that decision.

If you overcome the problem, conquer ,he says to you, “I will grant you to sit with me on my throne, as I have conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.” This statement is simply saying that you will be in complete union with God/Jesus/Holy Spirit , as one, living in him and him with you. So you are one with Jesus and you. In every way your mind is focused on what Jesus wants done, and that is where God's power is explosive and makes a different on the earth. That position can be you or your church. “Amazing”

I am repeating a paragraph I quoted at the beginning of the discussion with the seven churches.

As you have  looked at the seven churches have you been  thinking about the Christian World as a whole, yourself and your church. Have you moved from what God wanted you to do? Your life could be in order so that you have nothing to change, except keep on you journey with Jesus. Could be you have neglected your Bible. Maybe you have been caught up with some doctrine not in your Bible, maybe immorality. Maybe you deceived yourself into thinking you are on fire, but maybe your fire is dead or wrong as far as Jesus is concerned. Maybe you feel as though you have no power, a non person, maybe your church is not famous in your area. Jesus can be saying to you, you have power and your church has power. How about if you sit on the fence all the time, neither hot or cold on issues. Think about these things as you look at the seven churches in Asia. Jesus, the son of man is talking to you and your church.

We are now ready to look at what must happen. We will move into chapter 4

1Seven comes up time and time again. Seven stands for complete. So with the seven churches we can positively say that what the seven churches discuss is all we need to know. A complete picture of the Christian world.

2A sect within the church who compromised with pagan society. Apparently they taught that with Spiritual freedom they could practice adultery and immorality. NIV study note.

3You would have to assume that if your lampstand is moved that you have moved out of the vine, therefore as a branch, you or your church will lose your blessing and shrivel up. You can be saved from this situation by repenting and the son of man will attach you back into the vine John 15.

4We are clearly talking about Jesus Christ, the son of man who was crucified and rose again, John 20.

5There is a possibility those who say they are Jews but are not could be it is talking about the Jews by faith. Not all Jews are Jews, but the true Jew is one by Faith. Galatians 3:6, Abraham believed God, so God reckoned it righteousness to Abraham. It is Faith that makes you a Jew or not. If you have faith you are Abraham's offspring..for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith, Galatians 3:26,29.

6The second death is the lake of fire Revelation 20:14

7When we talk about Jesus we are also talking about God because when we see Jesus we see God John 14:9. This is not the time to ask whether Jesus is God that I am leaving for another publication in a few months.

32That hour can be the hour from Jesus Christ to now and the future, because if you look at 1 John 2:18, “Children it is the last now many antichrists have come ; therefore we know it is the last hour.

it can happen in any way. A way you do not expect. You can be sure if Jesus is talking to you you will know he is talking to you. You will have a decision to make, unless Jesus puts you into a position only one decision can be made.
